Rock Selection for Authentic Streamscapes
The choice of rocks determines the visual and ecological success of your aquascape. Prioritize these characteristics:
- Natural Aesthetics:
- Seiryu stone (hardwater-friendly) creates jagged cliffs with gray-white veining
- Dragon stone (softwater-compatible) offers porous textures for biofilm growth
- Lava rock (lightweight) mimics volcanic riverbeds while stabilizing pH
- Functional Properties:
- Test rocks with vinegar (fizzing indicates limestone, unsuitable for softwater)
- Ensure smooth edges to prevent fish injury (critical for fast-swimming species like Devario spp.)
- Quantity Calculation:
- Use 1-1.5kg rock per liter of tank water (e.g., 60kg for a 40L nano tank)
- Reserve 30% of tank floor space for open swimming areas
Layout Techniques for Dynamic Flow
- Rule of Thirds:
- Position focal rocks at intersections of imaginary grid lines
- Example: Place a large Seiryu stone at 1/3 from the left wall in a 90x45cm tank
- Depth Creation:
- Foreground: Flat slate pieces (2-3cm thick) angled at 15° for gentle flow
- Midground: Stacked dragon stones with 1cm gaps for water channeling
- Background: Vertical Seiryu formations (height ≤2/3 tank depth)
- Flow Direction:
- Arrange rocks diagonally from filter outlet to intake (45° angle)
- Use rock groupings to create S-shaped water paths for oxygenation

Maintenance Protocols
- Rock Preparation: Soak for 2 weeks (daily water changes) to remove minerals
- Algae Control: Scrub exposed surfaces weekly with a soft brush
- Structural Checks: Realign loose rocks during monthly water changes
