Screensaver fish follow strict, pre-set paths. All of them swim at the same fixed speed, flick their tails at the same rate and turn at the same angles. They never speed up, slow down or pause, and show no signs of being tired or relaxed. Most obviously, they cannot interact with their surroundings. They swim straight through plants, rocks and even other fish, repeating the exact same movements forever. This stiff, unchanging and mindless way of moving goes against how real living creatures behave, making them look obviously lifeless and artificial.

The scales on real fish are not flat, solid-colored surfaces. They have tiny layered structures that catch the light and create shifting, colorful shine. As water moves and light angles change, the fish’s body glimmers with delicate, dynamic brightness, creating a vivid, transparent look. In addition, real tank water is never perfectly clean. When a fish swims fast, water resistance slows its movement gently, creating smooth, natural swimming tracks. In screensavers, however, the water is completely frozen and still. Fish swim around as if floating in air, leaving no ripples, no flowing water and no swaying plants.
