Fish School Screensaver: Experience a Living 3D Aquarium on Your Windows Screen

Imagine a school of colorful fish swimming together, changing direction, searching for food, and exploring an underwater world. Now imagine that this aquarium is not a prerecorded video, but a real-time simulation that evolves as you watch.

Fish School Screensaver brings a dynamic 3D aquarium to your Windows computer. Powered by the classic Boids flocking algorithm, it simulates the collective movement of fish while allowing individual behaviors such as foraging, chasing, wandering, and courtship.

With 25 fish species, eight behavior modes, 10 aquarium backgrounds, and extensive customization options, Fish School Screensaver offers more than a beautiful underwater scene. It gives you a virtual fish school to observe, interact with, and customize.

More Than a Traditional Aquarium Screensaver

Many aquarium screensavers focus on displaying beautiful fish and underwater scenery. Fish School Screensaver adds another dimension: real-time fish behavior.

Rather than relying on a looping video, the program calculates fish movements continuously. Each fish adjusts its direction according to nearby fish, obstacles, and the boundaries of the environment.

As the simulation runs, the school can gather into tighter formations, spread out, turn together, or allow individual fish to leave the group temporarily.

The result is a changing underwater scene in which movement develops naturally from the simulation instead of following a fixed sequence.

Whether you watch for a few moments during a break or leave the aquarium running as your Windows screensaver, there is always something new to observe.

Discover the Intelligence Behind Fish Schooling

Fish School Screensaver uses the classic Boids flocking model, which simulates group movement through several simple steering principles.

Separation — Keeping a Comfortable Distance

Fish steer away from nearby neighbors to reduce crowding and overlapping. Increasing the separation weight creates a more widely spaced school.

Alignment — Moving in the Same Direction

Fish adjust their headings to match nearby fish. This creates coordinated movement as members of the school begin swimming in similar directions.

Cohesion — Staying Together

Fish move toward the center of their local group, helping the school gather and maintain its formation.

Obstacle and Wall Avoidance

Fish adjust their paths around obstacles and steer away from the environment's boundaries, creating more convincing movement through the aquarium.

Each behavior has an adjustable weight. You can experiment with different combinations to create a compact school, a loose formation, or a more varied pattern of movement.

This flexibility makes the aquarium interesting not only to watch, but also to experiment with.

Explore 25 Fish Species

Fish School Screensaver features 25 fish species, including Angelfish, Koi, Blue Tang, Guppy, Manta, Shark, and more.

You can select one fixed species for a consistent appearance or choose random species mode to introduce variety. In random mode, you can adjust how frequently the species change.

Appearance settings let you customize the fish population to suit your preferred visual style.

  • Fish Amount: Display up to 100 fish.
  • Fish Size: Adjust fish size from 0.4 to 0.8.
  • Fish Speed: Adjust swimming speed from 0.00 to 0.09.
  • Fish Species: Choose a fixed species or random selection.
  • Fish Colors: Use natural colors, varied colors, or a custom color scheme.

For a cinematic aquarium, try displaying fewer, larger fish. For a lively schooling scene, increase the population and let more fish fill the environment.

Eight Behavior Modes, Eight Different Experiences

One of the most distinctive features of Fish School Screensaver is its collection of eight behavior modes. Each preset changes how fish interact with their surroundings and one another.

1. Forage — Watch Fish Search for Food

Fish gradually become hungry and may leave the school to search for food. When they eat, their fullness increases, affecting how quickly hunger returns.

You can spawn up to six food items at once and watch fish respond to their locations.

Press P to add food while the aquarium is running.

2. Mate — Observe Courtship and Pairing

In Mate mode, an eligible fish searches for a partner. After approaching its target, the fish pair can swim side by side for a period before separating and returning to the school.

This behavior introduces a different rhythm to the aquarium, combining collective movement with temporary interactions between individual fish.

3. Cohesion — Form a Tighter School

Fish are encouraged to move toward the center of their local group, producing a more concentrated formation.

4. Alignment — Coordinate the School

Fish place greater emphasis on matching nearby headings, creating more synchronized swimming patterns.

5. Separation — Create More Space

Increase the tendency to maintain distance between neighbors and watch the school spread out.

6. Wander — Explore Independently

Fish can drift away from the main group and move more freely through the aquarium.

7. Chase — Add Energetic Movement

Fish chase one another, introducing short bursts of activity into the scene.

8. Random Behavior — Let the Aquarium Evolve

Random Behavior allows different actions to begin according to configured probabilities, creating a changing combination of schooling, wandering, foraging, and chasing.

Foraging and chasing share a limited pool of active fish, helping preserve the overall school while allowing individual fish to behave differently.

Customize Your Underwater Environment

The scenery is an important part of the aquarium experience. Fish School Screensaver includes 10 built-in aquarium backgrounds, allowing you to change the atmosphere without changing applications.

You can keep one background fixed or enable random background switching.

The program also provides 23 background transition animations, including fading, sliding, zooming, blinds, dissolving, radar sweeps, and other visual effects.

Additional settings let you customize transition speed, switching intervals, background color changes, and the use of images, solid colors, or gradient colors.

These options make it possible to create a consistent underwater environment or a changing visual experience.

Bubbles, Ripples, and Ambient Underwater Sounds

Small visual and audio details help bring the aquarium to life.

Fish School Screensaver offers 13 bubble styles, with adjustable bubble counts ranging from 10 to 200. You can select different effects, including slow-rising bubbles, colored bubbles, mixed sizes, glowing bubbles, and other styles.

If you prefer a cleaner scene, you can turn bubbles off.

Water-surface ripples add another interactive detail. Ripples can appear automatically at adjustable intervals, and clicking the aquarium scene creates a ripple immediately.

The built-in ambient audio includes water-flow and bubble sounds. A volume control lets you adjust the sound to your preference, and playback stops when the screensaver exits or its preview closes.

Together, these features let you create an aquarium that feels calm and understated or more visually active.

Interact With Your Virtual Aquarium

Fish School Screensaver is not limited to passive viewing. You can interact with the scene and experiment with different settings.

Here are some useful controls:

  • Left mouse button + drag: Rotate the aquarium view.
  • Left-click: Create a water-surface ripple.
  • P: Spawn food.
  • Space: Pause or resume the simulation.
  • S: Save the current frame as a screenshot.
  • Esc: Exit the running program.

You can also open the settings panel to adjust fish populations, behavior weights, behavior probabilities, background transitions, bubbles, ripples, and sound.

These controls make it easy to move from simply watching the school to actively exploring how its behavior changes.

A Relaxing Companion for Your Windows Desktop

A virtual aquarium offers a simple way to bring movement and color to your computer screen.

During a busy workday, you can pause for a moment and watch the school turn together. You can add food and observe which fish respond, experiment with a different behavior mode, or switch to another underwater background.

When your computer is idle, Fish School Screensaver can run full-screen as a Windows screensaver, replacing a static idle display with an animated aquatic environment.

You can also launch it in normal window mode when you want to view and interact with the aquarium directly.

The experience is customizable, so you can choose the fish, movement style, scenery, and ambient sound that suit your preferences.

Designed for Windows

Fish School Screensaver is built with MFC and OpenGL and targets Windows 32-bit (x86).

According to the product documentation, the requirements include:

  • Windows 10 version 1809 or later.
